How to Get Fancy with only $10

oh fancy

I'm a nature loving, thrifty gal, but man I do love fancy things.  I'll argue that I am just drawn to well designed things because I'm an artist.  But eh, I'll settle simply at "I like pretty stuff."  Here is the trick though, I grew up in a very not rich family and I myself am absolutely not rich.  I'm 24 and started up my own business within the last year.  And boy do I have college loans to pay off for the next ten years!  Woo!  But I think there are still ways to have fun and feel fancy even on a teensy tiny budget.

The other day I saw an article on how to makeover your home on $50 a week.  I thought, BAH!  I don't have an extra $50 a week to spare!  But maybe I can do $10 a week.  So this week, I went to Goodwill to see what sorts of goodies I could find that would total $10.

how to get fancy with only $10

I found a beautiful antique crystal decanter for $3.99, a gorgeous crystal dish with an elaborate lid for $3.99, and two little glass jars for $.99 each.  Total: $9.96
I have been using this jewelry box that I have had since I was 12 for quite some time now, and another jewelry box that was my great grandmas that I have had for years.  But I wanted to create a more sophisticated eclectic look in my bedroom, so I am using all of these pretty things as jewelry holders!

I'm thinking about painting my dresser black and adding crystal knobs to it, the ones at anthropology make me drool.  So pretty.  But Anthropology knobs also cost a minimum of $8 each.  And that means it would cost $98 to replace all 12 of the knobs on my hand-me-down dresser.  HA!  Not happening.  I'm going to keep my eye out for some glass and crystal knobs at the Goodwill in the coming weeks.  Wouldn't these crystal and glass containers look so gorgeous on a flat black dresser with glass knobs!  I'm saving my pennies for some thrift finds. :)

(ps, it looks like I must have spent lots of dollars on all my jewelry, but all but 4 pairs of earrings and 4 rings were given to me as gifts or hand-me-downs by my sisters, parents, friends, or awesome old ladies who I used to be buddies with when I was younger.  haha.  I never turn down the opportunity to rifle through old stuff that friends are getting rid of.  What's old and boring to one person can be a treasure to another!)

How have you bling-ed up your space on a budget?  I'd love some new ideas!

This is brilliant! My jewelry collection could definitely use some help. I've recently been working on spicing up my desk (I made over empty jars with pretty scrapbook paper earlier this week).

I really love this. Such a beautiful idea. The Goodwill is my absolute favorite place to find old crystal and milk glass.
Another great place to find some (cheaper than Anthropologie) door knobs is World Market. They are absolutely beautiful and budget friendly.

oh i love this! I always see things like this at thrift stores, but it's hard to put in a different perspective when it's surrounded by other junky things. i love your set up, i'll be on the lookout!

Great ideas, loooooove your ring collection. We JUST put up a post on our house and nearly everything in it is handmade or second-hand/DIY. My bling on a budget favorite? Estate sales. Cant wait for summer for this very reason!

I love this! You totally pulled off the fancy look.
I cleaned out every goodwill, salvation army, etc in dallas, austin, and ft. lauderdale of vintage cut glass the year before my wedding. we used them as votive holders at the reception. so i love going to these places!
also, this might sound crazy, but, try hobby lobby for crystal knobs! they have a bunch of knobs and im pretty sure ive seen crystal ones just like anthropologies. or, check out the sale section in anthro- ive found knobs there before. :)

Will you send me a link to that article about making over your home for $50 a week? Just curious... :)

Really nice! I love how expensive things look when they're paired with similar materials -- I can't wait to expand my milk glass collection!

I love thrifty fun!

i found a vintage letterpress drawer that is divided up in different sizes of squares and rectangles...the shiny things stand out so nicely against the vintage wood. Take a look at my blog...I will post a picture soon!
