I am really proud to be able to share with you a little interview with Kelsie from With Lavender and Lace! Kelsie is such an all around talented and sweet woman. She has some major photography skills, musical skills, art making/crafting skills plus she has a fantastic vintage shop! I really encourage you to check out her blog and shop because, snap, she has a lot to be proud of :)
My name is Kelsie McNair. I live in Boston, Massachusetts and am in the midst of my final semester at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts here in Boston. I am a film photo lady, a bookbinder, a musician, and a blogger. I run the With Lavender and Lace blog and vintage store. With Lavender and Lace is my Internet persona that I created in a desperate attempt to find myself in a city that’s easy to get lost in. It’s where I share my photo/film work and ideas, as well as my secrets. I also blog about my daily adventures in Boston and the music projects I am taking part in. The blog really gets me excited because it can really be a home to anything I think up or create. By getting random views from lovely ladies and gentlemen like yourself; I get to share my ideas with similar minded humans and reveal about the things I love and want to represent!
As for the vintage store, I am not really that interested in fashion or fashion blogging... I really just enjoy creating the imagery and the representation of a creative and interesting lifestyle. I love thinking up ideas about shoots/videos, getting together with my friends and making them look fabulous. It’s such a fun job! Knowing that the imagery sells the article of clothing, especially when the item is vintage is an important part of the process! Some of the items I find have absolutely no value when I first discover them. Then I spend time with them, working with them to bring them back to life. I run the vintage store to keep my creative juices flowing and earn extra cash. Eventually, I want to open up a gallery space (with vintage retail in back). The gallery will be the home to ever changing crafty and "kitchy" handmade/hand blogged/and hand sent art. I want to create a less threatening gallery environment for unconventional artist's to host and sell their work. This is the ultimate goal! Come hang out with me and my friends at the With Lavender and Lace blog!
1. When and Why did you decided to start your blog and Etsy shop?
With Lavender and Lace started in May 2010 when I needed a solid blog place to put all of my outcast film photos that never made it to flickr or my website. I started the vintage store (originally Kelsie Marie by the Sea) when I realized I was collecting TOO much clothing, so I threw my friends into some outfits and its been magic ever since!
2. What do you like to blog about the most?
I realllllly love blogging about my friends and collaborative projects. I know not everyone is into blogging and sometimes I think the best way to get work and ideas into the world is by just posting about it! I also love love love posting my film. Its one of my favorite things to do on With Lavender and Lace!
3. When did you start writing music and what do you love to sing about?
I started writing music when I was about 16. Looking back now, my songs were incredibly silly and hilarious. I played for several years with a few separate artists and never really took my own music seriously until just recently (last week, in fact). I am currently working on three music projects. The first being Happiest Lion, where I sing harmonies. I have been involved in the band since 2009. I just recently began two small yet AMAZING other musical projects…the first is called Evening Gardenia. It’s a folky/smoky/girly duo that dresses head to toe in floral and harmonizes melodiously as we sway in the breeze. The second is a personal project called Lemon. Think Grey Gardens meets The Never Ending Story. Keep a close watch/close ear for these things, they will be hitting the internet within the next month (hopefully)!
4. Who are your blog, etsy, and musical inspirations?
Hmmm, inspirations…this is always a tough one. There are a few bloggers I followed closely when I began blogging but now, I think the most important thing to my blog is to just be myself. I am the only ME in the world and why not just make it up as I go? I do pull a ton of inspiration from my friends and artists, and I constantly draw visual inspiration from thrifted books and the every moving flow of donated clothing down at the Goodwill store!
5. Is there anything else you'd like to tell us?
I’m also obsessed with bookbinding. To me, there is nothing more special than the perfect blank book to take with you everywhere you go. I have a terrible memory, and journals help me remember! I work really hard to make my books special by using recycled fabrics and materials. I will be opening up a Handmade With Lavender and Lace etsy in May, hopefully, where I will stash all of my favorite bindings and share them with the world.
