Molly from Vivi Dot: As with quite a few online purchases over the last few years, my Booze Cakes cookbook was introduced to me by Diana of Our.City.Lights. What can I say? She has excellent taste! I cook almost every day, but I'm not a huge baker except for when I'm going to or hosting party. I thought this book would be perfect for those festive occasions with two party elements featured in one yummy treat. Cake + booze = party time!
I made the Shamelessly Rich Carrot Cake and it was not only delicious, but also so cute! I also made the Marzipan Carrot Garnish that can be found in the back of the book (the cutest and easiest part of all).
Not only is this book loaded with tasty confections, but it also educates you on the basics of cooking with wine, spirits and beer. One very important point they cover is how much alcohol stays in the cake when baking. Sure, the hook is about spiking your recipes, but it's all about doing so in a way that enriches the flavor. There's also a section about classic cakes that traditionally contain liquor. These concoctions like Bananas Foster, Rum Cake and Tiramisu that have been around for ages are offered with an updated twist. Another section highlights confections based on popular cocktails such as Eggnog Cream Cupcakes, Pina Colada Cake and Rum and Coke Whoopie Pies. There's even a section with recipes for making your own flavored liqueurs and homemade mixers!
In addition to being educated and supplied with yummy recipes this book is also filled with incredible photographs of all of the mouthwatering goodies (much, much better than the snapshots I've included of my cake here). If you haven't picked up on this yet then let me explicit - I highly recommend Booze Cakes by Krystina Castella and Terry Lee Stone!
