Illustrated Portrait Discount + Nicola's Portrait

I just finished this rad portrait for one of my lovely clients Nicola!  It was so fun to draw someone with an edgy style.  I tend to have a soft hand when I draw which means my lines tend to be soft, smooth and curved.  So it is really exciting for me to get to draw someone with a darker, edgier look because it challenges my hand to create something a little more angsty in particular elements like the leather jacket.  But since I naturally tend to make my portraits look soft and feminine, my natural hand movements are made for creating soft facial features like Nicolas, a perfect balance to the edgy vibe of the portrait.  She has such a beautiful, soft and feminine face.  I absolutely love how she contrasts her naturally pretty look with a tough twist.
Did you know I used to have a septum piercing just like hers?  I got it in 2007 and I loved it but it accidentally fell out a year later Definitely one of the most empowering things I've ever done.  I'll have to tell you about it sometime :)

Moorea - this is breathtakingly beautiful. As an artist who cannot do realism whatsoever, I am constantly in awe of the portraits you create!!!

Also, did you say you piercing fell OUT?! Oh my god. Did that hurt? That sounds painful! :O

i think it's awesome that you used to have your septum pierced! i have mine done too but i rarely ever wear it out because i decided to get it pierced FOR ME and don't really feel a need to walk around for everyone else to know it exists.

i've had some scary experiences with it, though. my piercing migrated within the first few weeks of getting it done and 3 years later, because of the migration, the ring (which i wear flipped up so it sits in my nose) is more prone to shifting and i accidentally inhaled it in my sleep!! that was probably one of the scariest moments i've ever had! hopefully the event of yours falling out wasn't as scary!

I just found your blog and clicked around for a while and I think I'm in love! Your illustrations are AMAZING. I'm in art school right now and we have to constantly be bringing in examples of work that inspires us, and I am definitely going to print off some of your portraits! Also, my name is Lauren and I've never felt like a Lauren at all. I've never felt like it fit. I never changed it because I was too scared people would make fun of me, and now I'm 26 and I feel like it's just...too late. I am jealous that you changed your name to something you loved and that your parents totally dug it!
