It's pretty unfortunate because I am a major sweets lover and fruit lover and when I have sweet cravings, I try to eat some fruits instead of candy. But my list of favorite fruits is turning into my list of fruits I'm allergic to. So right now all I can really eat fruit-wise are bananas and oranges/mandarins/tangerines which aren't too exciting flavor-wise. Oh and lemons and limes, but I can't handle biting into their tangy-ness. Oh fruit... I miss you so much.
People have asked me if maybe I'm allergic to the pesticides. But I've tried eating local fruits and berries, organic and pesticide free fruits but I still get allergic reactions. Bummer.
I've been researching my fruit allergies a lot and one friend thought perhaps I was allergic to latex. But I researched it further and though I don't have any reaction to latex gloves or anything like that, I think what is happening is something similar to an allergic reaction to latex but is caused by my allergies to pollen. What I think is happening is explained pretty well here and here. I'm pretty sure I have something called Oral Allergy Syndrome which occurs in a large number of people who have pollen allergies, which I have. For most people, the Oral Allergy Syndrome symptoms only last a few minutes after eating the fruit or vegetable but for a few people, they experiences anaphylaxis which is really scary. I am somewhere in between right now. Some fruits leave my mouth really sore and itchy for 2 days after eating them, nectarines made my throat swell a little, and some just make my lips and mouth itchy and stingy for maybe an hour. I want to get tested for my allergies as soon as I can afford it because I really hope my allergies don't become really severe, and if they do, I want to be prepared.
But for now, I'm just going to stick to my bananas and citrus fruits and celebrate the friendship I have with them through their beautiful bright colors. (Do any of you have allergic reactions to fruit?)

Hi Moorea!
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about your allergic reactions to fruit! I have a similar story, when I was about 20 I suddenly became allergic to bananas! And I had the same symptoms that you are talking about; itchy mouth, throat, and irritated lips. Sometimes I even got hives on my face. I was never tested because I don't a reaction from anything else so I just avoid bananas.
But it especially sucks developing an allergy as an adult because you know what you are missing!!!
yes, yes, yes and yes!! i love these bright colors!

ReplyDeleteYou poor thing, I am so sorry to hear about your allergies. That is really tough- but hopefully the cheery colors of citrus help :)
ReplyDeleteWait, what about watermelon, cantaloupe, pears, grapes, raspberries and blueberries? Those have lots of flavor. And yes, neon. Fab.
ReplyDeleteOh, ha. Well i just reread it and duh, you have more to try out. Well get on it! Gotta quench those sweet fruit urges!
ReplyDeletetwo things:
ReplyDelete1. i have a friend who is allergic to pitted fruit & nuts. (perhaps related?)
2. i love pops of neon but i think as a redhead it can only be pops of neon-- not full-on neon-- for it work w/ my skintone.
I love this board, I want that gown for prom more than anything! And I'm sorry about your scary reactions, I hope you get it all figured out.

I'm tragically allergic to beer. It makes my throat and sinuses swell which makes for an especially bad hangover. Oh why couldn't we be allergic to something that's already unpleasant so we wouldn't be missing anything? Also, I wasn't really big on the neon trend before but your color board has me itching to try it out now.
ReplyDeleteBeen loving these colors recently too! That gown is to die for.
ReplyDeleteOh no! How terrible. Not what you need right now. It might be worse than being allergic to all forms of dairy like I am... not eating cheese is especially tragic, but I don't know what I would do if I couldn't eat berries. Gotta have my bluebs!
ReplyDeleteAre you allergic to jam made from those fruits, pasta sauces, or even fruit-flavored things like ice cream and sorbet?
WOW - I love your blog. So inspiring. I recently did a similar post on neon obsession :) maybe the entire world has become just as obsessed with neon as we are!
