Meet February's featured sponsor, Feather & Moss. I am a huge fan of their shop. I'm not one to collect many trinkets, but the treasures found in Feather & Moss are right up my alley. They have the most beautifully curated collections of natural and mysterious objects. You will have a chance to win the test tube picture above which contains a quartz crystal, pyrite, animal vertebrae and feather. Rad!
A little bit about Rachel & Vanessa:
We are Rachel Ballard and Vanessa Voelker, and we run a little natural history curiosity shop on Etsy called Feather & Moss. We’re both what you might call "nature people," and although we will both freely admit that we find sticky, buggy Midwestern high summer to be nigh on unbearable at times, we're generally really fond of the outdoors and the things that come from it. Rachel would describe her aesthetic as a little bit on the witchy side, while Vanessa leans more toward the sciencey stuff, but we meet harmoniously somewhere in the middle to make some really cool collections.
Wouldn't you know it, some people actually think it's kinda weird to thoughtfully arrange animal bones and fossils and rocks and taxidermy stuff in cute little vintage boxes or shelves! But you know what, everybody's got something funny they do that other people look askance at. Some folks watch Jersey Shore. Some still listen to Creed! Some people willingly drink Irish Car Bombs (WHYYY omg the curdling)!! It really does take all kinds, as they say, and we are the kind that love little curiosities.
1. What inspired you to open Feather and Moss?
The inspiration for Feather & Moss came from our own homes! Step into either of our livingrooms and you'll see skulls and bones, feathers, fossils, minerals, vintage microscopes, hundred-year-old apothecary bottles, and a truly astonishing array of little treasures we picked up on nature walks. We loved this stuff so much, we knew there HAD to be a way to share it with the rest of the world.
2. What other shops do you guys run?
Feather & Moss is Vanessa's first foray into the Etsy world, but Rachel has been around for a while and has a couple of other shops: Moonflowers Photography and Witchy Sparkles.
3. What is your day job and how do you juggle your jobs and hobbies?
Rachel does freelance photography and web design, while Vanessa is a full-time student majoring in Environmental Biology, and works part-time at a USDA research facility. Juggling parenting responsibilities, school, and work schedules can certainly be a challenge, but we enjoy what we do so much that we generally find a way to shoehorn in bone-hunting expeditions or antique shop excursions fairly regularly. And we hang out at least once a week to put together new collections for the shop. We find it to be a really centering activity! It's basically what keeps us sane in our crazy lives.
4. Anything else you'd like to share?
We decided early on that the larger collections we assembled seemed to take on very individual qualities... we felt as though they each manifested distinct personalities. One would feel particularly whimsical and little-girlish, another would be quite straight-forward and academic, yet another would feel a bit dark and enigmatic, maybe even a little disturbing. We began naming them based on the impressions they gave us, and then asked ourselves, "If they had a tale to tell, what would it be?"
So in addition to the natural beauty of the collections themselves, we feel it's this artful combination of Rachel's gorgeous photography and Vanessa's evocative story-telling that really makes Feather & Moss a unique experience. To us, each collection is almost like a little fairytale unto itself.
