The first step to planning ahead: Relax!

Did you take a little time off during the holidays?  I did and it was so good for my soul.  I don't think I have taken a legitimate vacation in over 2 years.  I've visited home a few times over the past few years and gone to Canada for a day or two along with visiting my boyfriend's brother and fiance in North Carolina for a few days last year.  But I'd always take blog design work with me wherever I went.  And honestly, of all the different jobs I've juggled over the years, blog designing was the most stressful for me.  So, since I quit blog designing right before Christmas, I was SO happy to just completely take time off from everything.  I put my shop on vacation, didn't touch my laptop very often, let my emails stack up and ah it felt great and so needed.

Now that I am back in Seattle, I am taking them time to really plan out what I want 2013 to look like on my blog.  I was going to do a post of "favorite posts from 2012," but honestly guys, as I was looking back on all my posts I was so unimpressed.  I didn't feel passionate about most of the posts.  For me, 2012 was about focusing on my blog last after a lot of other important things.  2012 was about growing my business, pursuing new opportunities online thanks to Pinterest, working hard on my last years worth of blog design, taking freelance work on when I could handle it, answering a million emails, and most importantly, investing in the person I love and cultivating one of two new close friendships.

Now that I feel so many of my goals of 2012 have ben accomplished with business and relationships, I simply want to sustain those areas of my life in a healthy, happy and balanced way.  And now that I am not doing blog design or any freelance illustration or design, I feel like I have a million more hours available to fill as I choose each day.  It feels amazing.  On top of the hours and hours of communication that blog design and freelance work required, the work itself was difficult because I needed to cater to my clients needs, somehow infuse a touch of my style in there, and I needed to make sure the blog design work suited the style of Freckled Nest all at the same time.  Having to please multiple people at once as I worked on blog designs really caused me a lot of stress and was probably my number one voiced complaint of 2012.  I love designing, illustrating, making things, pleasing others, and all the other added up elements of blog design.  But when it all was mashed together, I felt too much pressure.  I had plenty of wonderful clients, but even the sweetness and great attitude of the people I worked with did not ease my stress.  I will probably write a deeper post about why I quit blog designing another day.  But for now, all that being said, I feel a million times better not blog designing or doing any freelance design or illustration right now.  We'll see if I want to get back into in the future, but for now I am happy.

Anyway, so right now I am planning out how to better invest in my blog in 2013.  Something I really missed in 2012 was the interaction between readers and myself, commenting back and forth and hearing each others opinions and thoughts.  Now that I look back at my posts from last year, a lot of them feel empty.  And who would want to comment on something that feels like filler?  In 2013, I want to write on my blog with more depth along with including new features, bringing back a few old features, and of course a lot of fashion and design inspired posts.  I'm excited to fall in love with this space again.  And instead of just jumping right back in, I really want to plan things out and prep to make this space a fulfillment of what I really want published on the web.  I'm a planner, and in the past my blog was more of a space where I impulsively posted random stuff.  But now I am excited to plan, prep, organize, and focus this space.  I'm really excited :)  Hopefully I will redesign this space too in the next month or two!

So, all that being said, here are some of my favorite inspiring posts right now from some of my favorite blogs and websites.  As I take time to really focus on what I want my blog to be in 2013, it is really helpful for me to see what others are doing & fully allow myself to take interest in what I truly love.  How are you refocusing yourself and your spaces in 2013?  Here are some things I am diggin:

I want to get this book.
Kinsey has some great tips for blogging on a busy schedule.
A list of 40 Things to do with your posts after you've hit publish.
I saw this while on vacation & died with laughter.
I LOVE Nubby Twiglet's organization tips.
I think I'm going to start one of these "Good Things" collection jars for 2013.
I'm obsessed with these scarves.

Last but not least, I'm considering going to a conference in Dallas, TX in April.  Do any of you folks live near there?

Hi Mor,

I've been reading your blog for quite some time and I could hardly call any of your posts empty. As the time progresses so do you, and your blog just keeps getting better and better. It's very appealing visually and most importantly it has substance and character. I've been entertaining the idea of having a blog myself, and if I ever get to a point of no more procrastinating and finally launch it, I just hope it will be half as good as yours. Happy New Year and keep up the good work. Cheers!
