#GIVINGTUESDAY - Shopping for A Cause
It's Giving Tuesday, one of the most special days of the year to me and my team at mooreaseal.com. Did you know we donate 7% of all proceeds from our company to non-profits and have done so since we launched our store in 2013? We don't do this as a marketing ploy or to be trending. It is something my business partner and cousin Reed and I had chatted about for many years before we opened the store, about how we want our lives to have meaning in all that we do, in why we work hard, in how we make an impact on the world.
Today I want to share all about the 5 non-profits we donate to, why they mean so much to us on a personal level, and how shopping our site gives you the chance to give back at no extra cost to you or our designers. It's our mission to give with all that we are and all that we do, and to donate 7% of proceeds from us to our 5 favorite non-profits. Below is some more info about the organizations we donate to and why they mean so much to us.
OUR FEATURED NON PROFITS:
Our current Children’s Needs category is Youth in Focus, a program that strives to make an impact on urban youth through photography. Their mission is to empower children and teens to experience their world in new ways and to make positive life choices. Moorea herself is especially passionate about our Children's Needs category and the Youth in Focus program. It was through the arts that she herself found confidence and a belief that she could achieve her dreams despite any traumas, burdens, or blockades in her way. Through the Youth in Focus program, kids gain the chance to tell stories through their art, creating a vision of what inspires them and impacts them. It creates a new voice for kids whose everyday voices are stifled. We deeply believe in their mission.
“We put cameras in the hands of youth and place them in a challenging environment surrounded by high quality talented teachers, nurturing adult mentors, and create a strong community of support. Through photography our students find their voice, identity, creativity, and gain new confidence in their worth and abilities.” – Youth in Focus.
Our current Women’s Cause is Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA), an award-winning, nationally recognized nonprofit that provides holistic services to help refugee and immigrant women and families thrive. In 30 years of work with multi-cultural communities, ReWA has promoted integration and self-sufficiency. Their services are designed to quickly and effectively stabilize clients, promote acculturation, increase language proficiency, and improve employability. Moorea has a deep rooted passion for inspiring, encouraging and empowering women. Her strong belief in giving back particularly to the refugee community is passed down from her grandmother Betty who started the first 3 bilingual schools in the LA area and created the program that the nationwide ESL program is based off of. When Moorea saw that half of the people at her grandmother's funeral were former refugees from Vietnam who her grandmother helped during the Vietnam war, it only solidified her belief in helping the refugee community worldwide. We are proud to be based out of Seattle, WA where the Refugee Women's Alliance does so much good for those in need.
From a small, informal alliance of concerned refugee women, ReWA has grown to become one of the largest non-profit refugee and immigrant service providers in the Puget Sound area. Its programs respond to the complex needs of refugees and immigrants with the primary goal of making a positive and long-lasting impact on their lives.
Our Protecting the Planet non-profit currently is the Arbor Day Foundation. With every dollar you spend, more and more trees are planted across the U.S. With your help, the Arbor Day Foundation will plant thousands of trees in our nation’s forest by the end of the year! Our Vice President Reed Wasser's greatest personal mission is giving back to nature. He believe's in getting to the root of all of humanity and animal life's needs, rooted in the health of nature and the planet itself. With one more tree planted, more life is given the chance to grow, from healthy food for children of the world to more beautiful land for animals to roam. We support and admire the work the Arbor Day Foundation does to protect and improve our planet.
The Arbor Day Foundation strives to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. Founded in 1972, the centennial of the first Arbor Day observance in the 19th century, the Foundation has grown to become the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees, with over one million members, supporters, and valued partners.
Our current Caring for Animals partner is Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF), a non-profit organization comprised of volunteers dedicated to enriching and enhancing the lives of animals cared for by the Seattle Animal Shelter. SASF reflects the support that the Seattle community and Shelter volunteers have for this essential City agency. Our operations manager Jenette Donovan has a vibrant passion for caring for animals. Her undergrad degree in was in Animal Behavioral Psychology, and her cat Karu, who is the namesake of our in house curated line of accessories, was adopted from the Seattle Animal Shelter. For many years, she has fostered kittens from SASF and it was an obvious choice for us to support a foundation so close to our staff members hearts. Moorea, Reed, Jenette and our entire staff are huge animal lovers so you can bet this category of giving is so dear to each of us.
The Seattle Animal Shelter helps thousands of dogs, cats and critters every year. SASF provides the Shelter with a new way to support the many services and programs it provides for animals and the Seattle community, including veterinary care for shelter animals, a foster care program to provide temporary housing for surrendered animals, volunteer programs, public education programs, spay and neuter assistance for pets in low-income families, and programs that support the needs of homeless and unwanted animals in the community.
Our current non-profit partner in the Health and Wellness category is the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, an organization dedicated to the elimination of cancer and related diseases as causes of human suffering and death. Founded in 1975, the organization’s mission is to conduct lifesaving research. Their world-class scientists, including three Nobel Laureates, have revolutionized prevention, detection and treatment for several cancers and other diseases. When MooreaSeal.com was founded, Moorea's own mother was battling breast cancer, enduring chemo, radiation, hormone therapy, and alternative medicine. With the love of her community and a tough fight, she is cancer free today. With that reality check of recognizing how cancer effects almost every single family in the world, Moorea and her team wanted to partner with an organization whose main focus is in the prevention and elimination of cancer. Fred Hutch researches a wide variety of cancers and diseases, and with each donation, we feel the power of crushing cancer getting closer everyday.
Fred Hutch understands that disease research means more than searching for new treatments. They are home to the country's largest and oldest cancer prevention program, which has made key contributions to understanding how diet, exercise, and other factors reduce the risk of acquiring the disease.
