I got my first one when I was 17. I don't regret it- but I wish it hadn't gotten a stretch mark through it when I had my first child! (at 24) I have 9 tattoos in total- my favorite being a huge feather I have on my rib cage. It's an owl feather. My grandma loved owls. She sort of started my obsession with them. I wouldn't really change any of my tattoos, but maybe I would have put a few of them other places besides my ankles. Those make me a bit self conscious. I'm 36 now, and I will probably get at least a few more before the end.

I have "be love" with a little heart on my inner left wrist, and a unicorn/rainbow/stars/clouds/cupcake that takes up about 3/4 of my right arm :) my boyfriend has both his arms done and a couple on his leg

I was way nervous about getting tattoos and then regretting them later in life but I think that can easily be compared to making decisions and regretting them...you live life and make decisions throughout, your tattoos reflect your life and the person you were when you decided to get them. I have three that all represent me pretty well no matter how abstract they may be (skeleton key [ankle], sparrow [wrist], button w.ribbon [thumb]). I still want to get several more but I don't think I would be as committed to getting so many more if my boyfriend didn't have as many as he does. We also have a reliable, extremely talented tattoo artist that we go to. I love the fact that our artist is indeed an artist and his studio is filled with all his painted artwork, which is amazing! So, I think that if you do decide to get a tattoo you should love the work of your tattoo artist and feel confident in their abilities. :) -Lo

These are all so beautiful! I am a black ink tattoo kind of gal as well. The ones I have now are all Tibetan Buddhist (I spent several years living at a Tibetan Buddhist center and wanted it to always be a part of me). They're fairly simple and geometry focused and even though I got my last one about 6 years ago, they are still very "me." My next one is going to be in honor of Bubby dog. We got an ink mark of his paw print before he died but I've also been sketching out other possibilities. It is definitely a big decision and something you'll have forever, so I think it's good to think it through for a couple months. :)

i could totally see you getting a tattoo in this style. my biggest advice once you think you have an idea of what you want and where, think on it for several months before acting on it to see if it still floats your boat. (i did not take this advice myself and kind of wish i had.) i love all of my tattoos, but wish i would of thought the layout a bit better at the time. now im stuck trying to figure out how to fill in the gaps to complete my sleeve. and im pretty much all about getting meaningful tattoos, not just pretty stuff. if you ever do get one, i know you will have invested enough thought into it that you will love it forever.

I must say, I probably won't ever get a tattoo either, for exactly the same reasons. Lol. I actually really like the look of them (when they're done well) but I can't ever decide what I want to get that I'll still want to have on me in years to come, and also where I would want to put it. It's a really big decision!! Part of me just wants to do it on a whim and express myself with whatever I find beautiful now, and then another part of me is like, "Are you crazy??? What if you hate it a year from now?" Sigh... indecision... that's my Achilles heel, I swear...

I really like geometric tattoos, too. I have the outline of a cross on my ankle, and some Chinese symbols on my right pointer finger. Next I want to get the outline of the state of Oregon on my wrist! Apparently I'm afraid of permanently putting color on my body, because the tattoo ideas I have are always full of black lines and nothing else :)

I love the Joy Division one! I actually just saw Kate's comment and that's the first one i noticed. I personally love any tattoos but my personal preference is vintage traditional tattoos. I have a full sleeve on my left arm. As I've gotten older I've realized it's a status for money, at least in my area. Tattoos are really expensive here, so when I look at a young person with a full sleeve I think they must have a lot of money saved up!

I love the Joy Division one!! I've always wanted a tattoo, but I've always been scared of the pain and indecisive about what I want to get. If I can stand the pain I'm pretty sure now though that I want to get some kind of tattoo that honors each of my cats throughout my life, where I add on to it with each new one that I adopt. Something small, but really special to me.

Great and thoughtful post. I feel very similarly about tattoo permanence issues, and I always wished that I was someone who was a little more carefree in the skin department and could "collect" them the way that my boyfriend does and other close friends seem to be able to do. It's something that he and I talk a lot about, actually, and we both agree that aside from quality design work and a cohesive "personal brand" (so to speak) that you add to your body, getting tattoos really does have to be an extension of who you are in order for them to "look like you." So, because I don't feel as easy-going in my ability to get them, I don't think I should try to change my mind in order to get to a place where I feel like I can do it.

Having said that... I do have one! haha. It's a small skeleton key on my left ribcage, and when I was making up my mind, it just fit me, my personality, the way I think and the things I believe. I was 23 years old, and I had one of my best friends draw up the design for me, so I love it very much. I really do think it's an extension of who I am, and it's such a surprise to so many people that I have one at all. I've had a design in mind for my upper-inner left arm, and while I'm not quite there yet, I really do think I'll end up tattooing that spot as well, or my upper-right thigh. Beyond that, I'm pretty set. I leave all the tattoo business to my bf. :)

I got my first tattoo when I was 18, and have been adding steadily even since. They started off very small, and each one I add just gets bigger and bigger! (My newest is a half sleeve, which I'm just in love with) I agree with a previous poster that a lot of people think they have to over-justify the reason for them and come up with some elaborate symbolic meaning. That said, almost all of my tattoos have meaning to me, but some of them are things I just really LIKE. That don't stand for anything, yet they feel very "Me", if that makes sense. As far as changing your mind about what you like, I definitely have a few that I wouldn't necessarily choose again. But I don't regret them either, because they remind me of a certain time in my life. It's almost like when you hear a song from a certain time in your life and it takes you back, even if you don't listen to that band all the time anymore.

these tattoos are gorgeous! i simply love them! i have a few tattoos myself, but before i go get it, i have to give myself at least a year determining if i really like it. because if i still love it after that time period, then i know that it's right for me. if i forget about it at week 8, then i move on! it's good to really thing about it, or keep it small. small tattoos, if hidden, are not as bad because you can kind of forget about them if you hate them!!

I really love that first one. But all of them are amazing! I have always wanted to get a tattoo and my husband did too for a while but has since changed his mind. I still want to get one to represent my family in some way, but I want to make sure it's exactly what I want on my body for the rest of my life. :) Such a hard decision. haha!

Getting tattooed does change things...If you plan on having a fair few, that is. Ever since I have had 'a lot' (I don't really consider it a lot, but some people do) on my legs I am CONSTANTLY looked up and down, especially on the tube in London on my way to work. It can drive me a bit crazy. But hey, you can always cover most of them up!

It is certainly a big decision to make nevertheless! : )

I think you just have to freakin' get tattooed if you want to! It's not really the life-changing event people make it out to be...unless it's on your neck or something.

The first one's always a 'big deal' - people always feel like they have to justify their decision by putting entire life stories into it. Working in a tattoo shop for nearly five years I've seen a lot of people transform from where you are now to being a 'tattooed person'. It's really neat to see.

I like all these tattoos you've posted here, I totally agree with the 'lots of black, lots of negative space' thing. The only advice I can give you, and I'm sure your tattooer will say the same, is don't get any lettering too small like in that last picture, tattoos need room to grow. :)

It's funny. I think you and I have similar views on tattoos. I have many friends that have tattoos. Some of them thought them through, some got them right at 18, and some just got something cute and pretty. I have always toyed with the idea of getting a tattoo. I either told myself that I would get something stupid or something really meaningful. I think I'm leaning way more towards the meaningful one but I have no idea what I would get. I have a few ideas but nothing good enough to have on my body permanently. I also love just black ink, geometric shapes and text.

I think it's awesome and super wise of your father to get tattoos in his 50s. I think that's so neat!

Oh, Moorea!!! I adore this post, simply adore. I have been wanting a tattoo for years now and I even KNOW what I do want - to wear on my skin - foreva. I simply haven't had the money!!! Your style is gorgeous and I think if you do end up getting a tat one day, it'll be beautiful! Here's my dream list...

Jack-o-Lantern Kitty (I've even designed him) - Why? Because: I love Halloween, it's my fav. holiday, I love kitties and am a "cat" myself (a Leo!) and Jen is a "cat" as well (a Tiger in the Chinese Zodiac!) Plus I just love those furballs!

A ship with a sea wave - Why? Because: I love pirate's, I'm obsessed with them really. Not just fictional pirates, but real ones, with hard lives. I just love everything about that time and I imagine I could have been one. I also adore the sea, I feel like Jen and I will one day run away and live on the sea in a sailboat (becoming liveaboards, our dream!)

The number "13" or "September 13th, 2007" in a pretty font - Why? Because: 13 is my lucky number, Friday the 13th is when Jen and I started dating and on September 13th, 2007, got married!

A pentacle, preferably with a vine or some such nature-y stuff - Why? Because: I'm Wiccan and this is a symbol of power, love and pure protection!
